BGDG X Wilberforce

The Wilberforce University Gymnastics Team was set to make its official debut in January 2026. After Talladega College unexpectedly canceled its gymnastics program, Wilberforce University President Dr. Vann Newkirk partnered with Brown Girls Do Gymnastics to accelerate the launch of Wilberforce’s program, ensuring that the athletes from Talladega could continue their season without disruption. As a result, eight gymnasts from Talladega transitioned to Wilberforce, joining a roster led by head coach Dr. Morgan Byrd, DPT.

The team will kick off its inaugural season on January 4 in San Diego at a multi-session competition. The squad consists of 12 athletes, including two international students, five freshmen, four sophomores, and 3 upperclassmen. With the enthusiastic support of a dedicated booster club and a fundraiser by The Isla® Foundation, the Wilberforce University Gymnastics program has fostered a strong community, enabling team retreats and providing athletes with gear and resources.

With a commitment to excellence and teamwork, Wilberforce University Gymnastics is excited to represent the institution in this groundbreaking season.

Developing our first-ever women’s gymnastics team will promote student and alumni engagement and pride; enhance the college’s brand; and help create a pipeline of diverse gymnasts.
— Dr. Gregory J. Vincent, Talladega College President
